The evolution of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) over the last decade or so has
rapidly transformed how people connect and interact with technology. Augmented
Reality (AR) is one of the emerging technologies in this field of research and it has
been increasingly gaining popularity. The potential of further integration of virtual
content into our real environment is great and is an area that many researchers are
looking into, be it in terms of wearable AR devices or fixed installations.
The objective of this project is to create a low cost interactive spatial augmented
reality (SAR) tabletop space, whereby virtual and tangible objects co-exist. This is
achieved through creating interactive and context-aware three-dimensional
applications that demonstrate the interaction between virtual information and the
physical objects. The system used to create this space has to be highly responsive
and possess a reasonable speed of execution.
In this project, we have developed ways to create three- dimensional interactions
between the user, the tangibles and the virtual content, through modelling the
physical objects into the virtual game world and augmenting the visual feedbacks
onto the table top. An automated calibration process has been implemented for the
system as well, creating a more convenient and easy way to setup the system. AR
applications for gaming and for education have been developed to demonstrate the
potentials of the system. |
