Summary: | Human brain is the center of the nervous system which controls the other parts of the body. It runs every function in the human body including olfactory perception. Through electroencephalography (EEG), brain activities can be measured in terms of brain signals.
In this project, EEG based brain signals subjected to scent stimuli were collected and analyzed. Two different scents, lavender and peppermint were used to provide scent stimuli and the experiments were conducted in a controlled environment in a specially designed laboratory. Twenty participants attended the experiments with each having two sessions in two different days. For each participant, the relaxing state and smelling state were both recorded for comparison and in each session, only one scent (lavender or peppermint) was used.
The whole recorded segment for each session was then segmented manually to eliminate artifacts. The clean segments were then processed by MATLAB programs to generate results. Power for each band was used to extract features. Both similar and different features for lavender and peppermint were extracted and discussed. |
