The proposed security system is designed to track, monitor and control vehicles that are used for a particular purpose, as well as to stop the stolen vehicle from restarting and track it for retrieval. It consists of a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, a Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM) module and a satellite modem and a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus interface to monitor and control the vehicle. In such system, data need to be processed and transmitted via wireless communication channels. However, the wireless communication channels are more vulnerable compared to wired networks. Implementation of cryptographic algorithms is hence essential. Furthermore, intelligent hackers can access the computer memory and tamper with an embedded system to obtain the secret key which is crucial for the cryptographic algorithms. To combat with the intelligent hackers, a highly secure hardware module is needed to ensure that all the design including secret key remains securely locked within the hardware secure module. This project aims to implement a cryptographic algorithm with a new design for secret key protection in a true non-volatile field-programmable gate array (FPGA) module. Extensive research has been conducted to determine a feasible solution for constructing a high secured system. A LatticeXP2 FPGA and Cortex-A8 ARM processor interconnected framework has been proposed in this project for hardware-based decryption. An Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) decryption algorithm implemented in VHSIC hardware description language (VHDL) with FPGA and an AES encryption algorithm in C language with ARM processor for vehicle electronic system security design have been successfully implemented to provide a good foundation for further development.
