In a survey by IDA held in 2010, the most commonly engaged Internet activity was for communication like sending and receiving emails, which also topped the list of activities on mobile devices. While in most cases users of mobile devices do not require additional security to protect their messages which are sent in clear text via email providers, there are cases where secure communication is required. This report discusses the implementation of a secure mobile mail application, the SecMail app, developed for Android smartphones. The SecMail app is designed to encrypt mail messages using the AES algorithm. The app allows users to manage contacts that are recipients of the mails and also provides them option on whether to share the encryption key with selected contacts. This report describes how the SecMail app was strategically planned and implemented using common software engineering methodologies while utilizing the Google Android SDK. Lastly, system tests were carried out to ensure the app is able to provide the required functionality.
