Gan Woon Seng School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering Due to the increasing prevalence of 3D movies and 3D gaming, there is a corresponding demand among the consumers for a better listening environment while playing 3D games or watching 3D movies. Nowadays, the usage of headphone is rather popular in order to create a more desirable and personal sound field for consumers. Nonetheless, the anticipated sound scene normally moves with the end user while listening to the earphone. This is not in line with the actual experience in our daily life. With the monitoring of the head movement, it is possible to reduce this disparity by connecting the head-motion sensors to the earphone. This project is mainly to design a real-time 3D sound system with head tracking. To design such system, author has read a lot of thesis about 3-D sound system and HRTF filter. Enough hands on excises are also essential to realize the real-time 3D sound system well. In this project, the head tracking function is to provide the position parameters of the listener’s head. With proper audio filtering, the sound track will be processed based on the position parameters to compensate the head displacement. Eventually, the filtered sound track will provide listener with an immersive 3D sound environment similar to loudspeaker listening experience. In the implementation of this system, listener can hear the 3D sound effect difference from -80 degrees to +80 degrees azimuth angle when they rotate their head. At the meantime, this system is extremely suitable for sound application in 3D movie and 3D gaming.
