Development of a dual output switch mode power converter (SMPS) for audio/video application

A switch mode power supply (SMPS) is an electronic power supply unit that incorporates power transistors that are continuously switching on and off with high frequency in order to provide the transfer of electric energy. An output parameter is controlled by varying duty cycle, frequency or a phase s...

An output parameter is controlled by varying duty cycle, frequency or a phase shift of these transitions while a linear maintains the desired output voltage with dissipating excess power. In this report, a switch mode power supply is designed and implemented with the requirement of dual output with total power of 250W for audio and video application. For theory part, basic understanding of switch mode power supply (SMPS) and flyback topology are mainly stated to obtain a desired design. One of the important components of this project is the transformer as the flyback converter transformer combines so many functions (energy storage, galvanic isolation, current-limiting inductance, selecting core size, selecting “on” period, minimum primary & secondary turns and etc). For design part, we simulate the circuit with PSIM software and select power components to design the circuit for Primary (Input Rectifier, Input Capacitor, UC3844 SMPS Controller, etc) and Secondary ( Rectifiers, Output Capacitors) side of transformer. The rest of components like resistors, capacitors and diodes are selected for snubber networks, decoupling in SMPS controller, stability, inrush, transient response of whole operation, hold up time, start up time and etc. Due to non-ideal simulation results obtained, some components are needed to be reselected. Especially for input rectifier and additional implementation to output over load protection. The simulation results in this report are represented the effectiveness of each part of this project’s design.
