Computers, televisions and home theater systems are the source of media for many.
While there are newer models of televisions that allow users to control via their mobile
phone, older generations of television still require Infrared (IR) remote control to
operate.
Taking this into consideration, the focus of this project is set on home automated system
using smart phones as the primary user interface.
Home automation is defined as the use of computer and Information Technology to
control home appliances and features (such as windows or lighting) [1]. Systems can
range from simple remote control of lighting to complex computer or micro-controller
based networks with varying degrees of intelligence and automation. Home automation
is adopted for reasons of ease, security and energy efficiency. However, the technologies
are known to be expensive and cumbersome to setup. In this project, I will explore and
develop an inexpensive solution for a dedicated hardware component in home
automation, using an android phone acting as the remote control. |
