Description
Summary:The increasing pollution and energy demand, coupled with improving semiconductor technologies put renewable energy such as solar energy in the spotlight. Solar energy is inherently DC sources. Furthermore many loads are now DC loads due to the increasing usage of switch mode power supply and variable speed drive. Hence the idea of implementing DC network occurs. In order to implement the DC network, the voltage level of the system must be determined as it affects several factors such as system efficiency and safety. Hence this study aims to investigate the optimal DC voltage in a residential setting by simulating a DC network with various loads and voltage level. It was found out that 48Vdc appears to be the most promising as it can be implemented on existing infrastructure, provides energy savings compared to AC network and relatively safe to handle compared to high voltage.
