Summary:In recent years, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) has been used in various applications such as flight dynamics, GPS, robots and smart phones. IMU is a combination of accelerometer and gyroscope sometimes also includes magnetometer. With the sensors integrate on a single PCB board, IMU is capable to detect the linear acceleration and orientation changes of the board. In addition, magnet field in vicinity will also be detected. [1] Furthermore, with sensor fusion algorithm, IMU can provide more valuable information such as the absolute orientation of the board in earth frame and the linear acceleration excluding the gravity. In this project, a smart dumbbell application is developed using IMU provided by STMicroelectronic. Dumbbell is widely used equipment in gyms and household. However, many armatures do not have an idea on how to train efficiently with a dumbbell. In addition, people do not know how to make a schedule and hard to stick to the schedule during the training. This dumbbell application can facilitate people with their training. For example the application can count the number of rounds that the user has done for a specific posture, in addition detect the quality of the posture. The application can also make a schedule for the user to guide users with their body building.
