Wang Peng School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering::Power electronics Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular these days, as people are more aware of their benefits over gasoline fueled cars. EVs do not directly produce gaseous pollutants, making them friendlier to the environment. Their engines also require less maintenance than combustion engines, and are a lot more efficient with 60% power efficiency compared to the 20% power efficiency of combustion engines. Hence their running costs are much lower. However, a major drawback for EVs is that their typical range is only 100km, which means they need to be recharged daily. Furthermore, recharging may take a few hours. Making the recharging process convenient is crucial for EVs to become more widely accepted by the public. In this project, we will design a Metering/Payment/Control System (MPCS) which can measure and calculate charging costs based on readings from an electric meter and the real-time electric prices in Singapore, as well as carry out the financial transaction using smart card technology. As charging can take a few hours, the user may not want to wait at the charging station. A website will be designed to allow users to check on the charging status.
