Description
Summary:This final year project involves the design of a high gain antenna which is compatible with a XBee/802.15.4 RF module in order to further improve the range of the wireless network. This report introduces the setup used to implement the wireless connection between two XBee RF modules, and the designing of the high gain antenna. The decided design for the high gain antenna is to use axial mode helical antenna theory. The ZigBee setup for point to point network wireless communication is done by using two XBee 2mw Wire Antenna – Series 2, Arduino Uno R3, Arduino XBee Shield, and XBee Explorer. XBee 2mw RPSMA Series 2 is used to test the designed axial mode helical antenna. The axial mode helical antenna is made from coiling 2.6mm copper wire around a PVC tube with 40mm diameter. A square aluminium plate is used as the reflector plate, and the copper wire is soldered to a N-type connector. Impedance matching is done by soldering a copper strip to the copper wire and N-type connector. Coaxial cable is used to connect the helical antenna to the XBee RF module. By building a high gain axial mode helical antenna compatible to the XBee RF module, we seek to achieve an improvement in the range for the wireless connectivity between the two XBee RF modules.
