Description
Summary:Broadcasting is a common method to discover a route or transmitting the messages in protocols designed in ad hoc networks. In order to propagate useful traffic information to other vehicles around, the way of broadcasting are adapt to the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). Nevertheless, the scheme of broadcasting causes some problems in VANET such as the broadcasting storm which is that there may be lots of duplicated information being broadcasted in the network. In this dissertation, we will propose a novel protocol to mitigate the broadcast storm. The work starts with an introduction about the technologies existed in vehicular ad hoc network. It also presents some applications, characteristics and challenges in VANET. Then it analyzes and compares various categories of broadcast protocols in VANET. Reliable broadcasting of messages in VANET is a promising research field. The new broadcast protocol presented in this dissertation combines location-based and probability-based approaches with the aid of Global Positioning System (GPS) or Received Signal Strength Indictor (RSSI) of neighboring nodes to minimize duplicate messages retransmission. The simulation of the novel protocol and the performance evaluation which is superior over the existing ones will be presented.
