Summary: | Pin-loaded tapered lugs with and without cracks were analyzed using boundary
element method to determine the tangential stress distribution and the stress
intensity factors. The effects of various parameters such as the angle between the
two edge surfaces of the tapered head, the outer-to-inner radius ratio, the direction
of the load applied and the crack length were evaluated. The location where a crack
may initiate and subsequently propagate was determined by finding the tangential
stress distribution along the edge of the hole in the unflawed lug. In the presence of
a crack, the stress intensity factor is sensitive to the outer-to-inner radius ratio
(Ro/Ri) and the crack length a. |
