The study of “The Strange Tales of LiaoZhai” in Zidishu
Zidishu of the Qing Dynasty is a form of folk art that...

Zidishu of the Qing Dynasty is a form of folk art that encompass the customs among the people, while retaining gracefulness within the presentation. Every word in Zidishu was crafted in conjunction with the author’s perspective of life and the society of that era, showcasing the daily lives of commoners, but not forgoing the nobility that the Manchu author exudes in his work. Research of Zidishu throughout the academe had increased over the years, yet the main focus were constantly on the overall composition of the work and the in-depth studies of the chapters “The Dream of the Red Chamber”, while overlooking the chapters on “The Strange Tales of Liaozhai”, the second most in amount in Zidishu. Through the research and analysis of the “The Strange Tales of Liaozhai”, and building a comparison with the adaptation in Zidishu, we were able to gain insights of how the latter harmonises beauty of words and aesthetics of common art forms within the people then. This thesis will study the chapters of “The Strange Tales of Liaozhai” inZidishu from three key directions. Firstly, it is to sort the themes of the tales within the chapters into classifications. Secondly, I will summarize the formats utilised by “The Strange Tales of Liaozhai” inZidishu for analysis. Lastly, by comprehensive studies and comparison with the original work, “The Strange Tales of Liaozhai”, in order to understand how the adaptations of the contents sought to coincide with the aestheticism of common folk arts. |
