This paper bases itself on Singapore’s immigrant history, and observes Singapore’s immigration policy trend that has shifted its focus from attracting foreign talents in the 1990s, as seen from “Contact Singapore” as the organization to have executed this policy, to integrating new immigrants in the 2010s, in which the “National Integration Council” was set up. Focus is placed specifically on the Chinese immigrants, as the paper looks at how grassroots organisations, clan associations and Hua Yuan General Association of New Immigrants from China, and Singapore’s Chinese language media are actively involved in integrating new immigrants through the nation-building approach. According to Benedict Anderson’s concept of “Imagined Communities”, in an attempt to construct one imagined community within the nation, Singapore’s efforts seemed to also further set apart Singapore citizens and her new citizens.
