For the past 28 years, Singapore’s economic growth and development have been significantly a result of direct foreign investments and foreign trade. Her highly open economy has made her vulnerable to both external and domestic factors, affecting investments and export competitiveness. Examples are rising protectionism among the industrialized countries and labour shortage in the local economy respectively. Therefore Singapore has to venture abroad to regain her competitive edge. As the East Asian region is at its most dynamic stage, Singapore will do well to use her expertise in financial services and urban development to venture regionally. But due to the unwillingness of entrepreneurs to expand overseas, the Singapore Government has to provide incentives and assistance to encourage overseas venture.
