Time-restrictive Chineseness : the construction process of Tan Hiok Nee heritage walk and its significance

Malaysia is a highly heterogeneous country and the relation between different ethnic groups is a sensitive topic. Ethnical places such as Chinatown, whether they are created by the ethnic Chinese community or other ethnic groups, are always sources of controversy. The Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk is an exception. It was an ethnical area that was recognised by the authorities. The acceptance of such a place stems from a change in attitude towards ethnical places. Studies on features of the heritage walk have shown that the planner of the heritage walk have carefully selected and interpreted the cultural contents, such that the contents contain both the local flavour and Chineseness. The walk has shown signs of accepting different cultures from other ethnic groups to a certain extent amid the prevalence of Chineseness, though it needs to improve on its openness. The management has envisioned these cultural contents to be time-restrictive. This paper explores how residents and tourists interpret the street within and off a specific time limit through questionnaire investigation. Survey has shown that the residents and tourists have different interpretation to the heritage walk’s regional significance on two different time frames. |
