A rolling love pea : a case study on Singapore Cantonese opera

Description
Cantonese Opera, affectionately known as 'Red Bean' was first brought into Singapore by Chinese immigrants in the early 19th century. Although it was relegated to marginal culture status due to the impact of modernisation and Singapore's post-independence challenges, it fought bravely to remain as part of Singapore's culture. After the first one-way transnational Cantonese Opera network was formed in the 1950s, a two-way network appeared by the 1970s, resulting in the rapid formation of transnational networks by the early 21st century, which in turn witnessed the birth of China as another Cantonese Opera centre, alongside Hong Kong for Singapore. Thus, the closer transnational networks provided a more conducive environment for the continued survival and development for Cantonese Opera in Singapore. Besides studying the phenomenon as mentioned, case studies of Singapore Cantonese Opera veterans, Mdm Chee Kin Foon, Mr Ling Dong Ming and their students will also be conducted. Drawing from their past experiences with modernisation, the veterans understood and reinforced the importance of diversified groupism while conducting lessons for the traditional Chinese art form. With the arrival of young Chinese Singaporeans students in recent years and softened stance towards dialectical policies by the Singapore Government, it rekindled one's hope for its survival in modern-day Singapore.
