Characterization of polymeric fabrics for applications in cricket helmets used in tropical climates

Sweat management is a serious concern for athletes especially if it affects vision during games. Cricket helmets are an example of a dual function equipment in which, along with safety, sweat transport is also an important concern. Cricket helmets are an example of a dual function equipment in which, along with safety, sweat transport is also an important concern. In order to improve this, many synthetic fabrics have been developed. This study reports relevant absorptive properties and basic physical characteristics of nine commonly used fabrics in sportswear which include varying blends of polyester, cotton, polyamide and elastane. SEM was employed to examine the physical appearance at high magnification. FTIR was performed to confirm the molecular structure and functional groups of the fabrics. MMT was performed to measure moisture related behavior. Results obtained were then discussed in the context of the application.
