Outlining the recent developments of the Chinese society, this study discovers that it was a daunting task for Malacca’s Chinatown to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and to have become what it is today. Furthermore, due to politics and other factors, Malaysia does not have an official Chinatown recognized by the government or relevant authorities. After experiencing various political changes, the functions and significance of Malacca’s Chinatown has changed overtime. Government policies have made it into a tourist attraction, and survey findings have shown that the locals welcome such a development. Although challenges are faced, as long as the government maintains their preservation works, and the Chinese society and Malaysia’s relationship with the Chinese government remain stable, Malacca’s Chinatown will become Malaysia’s top tourist attraction, and continue to highlight its value as a World Heritage site.
