| Summary: | Pierre Bourdieu (2001) uses ‘schemes’ to understand that thoughts and perceptions can be a reflection of existing relations of domination. This research is inspired by his theory and designed with reference to Willard Waller’s (1937) research on dating and courtship. This research will be focused on exploring gender and power relations among Singapore university students who are involved in romantic relationships. Data collection is done through a general survey and in-depth interviews. Findings show that particular schemes exist among couples during decision making. These schemes reflect male dominance. Females has few strategies against such male dominance, nonetheless it shows their efforts in attaining more egalitarian decision making within romantic relationships. |
