Summary:The report seeks to study the harmful effects of smoking on the society in Singapore, through valuing the social costs of smoking in three different parts, namely the medical, morbidity and mortality costs incurred due to smoking-related diseases. The final social cost obtained is $3, 726,757,296.53, with $36,052,785.38 coming from the medical costs, $8,358,119.97 coming from the morbidity costs and $3,682,346,391.18 coming from the mortality costs. The report also identifies past solutions that have been implemented, such as using legislation and campaigns, to curb the rising trend of smoking in Singapore, and proposes solutions to help further reduce this trend, especially among the youth smokers.
