Wong, Chee Chung Liao Kin School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Nanotechnology 154 p. Cell adhesion and detachment are crucial components in cancer spreading, which often leads to recurrence and death. In this work, the traction force generated by cancer cells during spreading, cytoskeleton disruption, and detachment was quantified through direct electrical measurements on a novel electromechanical platform, amenable to high-throughput. This platform is based on mechanical structures, built around standard silicon processes, in which silicon nanowires (NWs) were embedded as miniature sensing elements to measure the surface stress on the mechanical structures, thus enabling to monitor of the traction forces applied by the cells to substrate during spreading. The scope of this research spans four topics; namely the electromechanical characterization of silicon NWs, and more particularly harnessing the giant piezoresistance effect in NWs, the characterization of their response as surface stress sensors, and lastly applying NWs in mechanosensing.
