Production of bioalcohols from microbial fermentation has drawn considerable attention recently because of the increasing environmental concerns on global warming, growing demand for energy, and depletion of fossil fuels. One of the major obstacles that hinder development of biofuel fermentation is the high sensitivity and low tolerance of microorganisms towards the stresses encountered during fermentation. Examples of fermentation stresses include toxicity of the end products (e.g., bioalcohols) and osmotic pressure. As a result, development of robust and productive microbial strains with enhanced resistance is of great importance to the production of biofuel alcohols.
