The first unit trust in Singapore was introduced in 1957. Since then the number of unit trust in Singapore has grown to more than ninety different types of funds. With the support from the government, the growth of unit trusts on Singapore has become more intense in recent years. For example, in 1992, the Singapore authorities relaxed a number of investment restrictions on the use of the CPF funds, especially for those with larger accounts value, thus creating the opportunity for fund managers to create unit trusts for them. As of l l of January 1997 , the CPF board will merge the Basic Investment Scheme (BIS) and the Enhanced Investment Scheme (EIS) to form the new CPF Investment Scheme (CPFIS). This will allow more investors to invest in the approved unit trusts and other financial instruments.
