Dissatisfactions with job choices arise from many sources - incompetent supervisor, gloomy office, low salary, far-away workplace, boring job, unstable future, etc - that a good career choice is only a relative term but never an absolute one. In Singapore, particularly, there is the constant comparison of the private sector against the public sector. This is essentially because of the compromising availability (or unavailability) of certain job attributes, namely pay and security. The public sector provides high level of security while the private sector thrives on a generous salary and benefits system. This study investigates which job attributes are actually the discriminating factors when choosing either of the sectors. A section of the undergraduates from the 2 local universities were sampled. Their expectations on 8 job attributes and their perception of the availability of the job attributes in the private and public sector were solicited. The undergraduates apparently are high on advancement opportunities and international assignments when choosing either of the job sectors. Other findings from the survey are discussed, including the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the private and public sector. Finally, the results are used to highlight some recommendations for organizations to use as a tool to improve on their recruitment efforts.
