The driving force of this applied research project is to determine how networking can provide local Chinese firms with an advantage over multi-national corporations. Through literature review, the researchers found a lack of research with regards to comparing the extent and type of networks used by multi-national corporations and local Chinese firms. In-depth interviews on four local Chinese firms and two multi-national corporations in the computer industry were conducted for the project. Through these extensive studies, the researchers discovered that local Chinese firms tend to rely more on personal networks whereas multi-national corporations on formal networks. All interviewees expressed that networking is critical to business success. The researchers hope that their research project can provide greater insights into the value of networking and that further studies can be made to improve on this area of study.
