This report examines the effect of U.S. trade deficit news on the automobile industries and companies in both Japan and the U.S.. The persistency of the large trade deficit between U.S. and Japan motivates us to conduct this research. We formulate three hypotheses and run regression to test these effects for the period 1980 to present. Our data consist of forecasted and actual trade deficit figures, and stock returns of various automanufacturers in both U.S. and Japan automotive industries. Our findings showed that there is no significant impact on the industry level and most of the individual automanufacturers except for Toyota and Honda. Finally, we conclude with some suggestions that may improve future research.
