Chiang, Michelle Hui Ling Cornelius Anthony Murphy School of Humanities and Social Sciences DRNTU::Humanities 120 p. The characters in Samuel Beckett's trilogy of novels, Molloy, Malone Dies and The Unnamable, are observed in this thesis as alternating the focus of their conscious minds, like a pendulum, between an external physical world and an internal world of fabulation. His characters are delineated as perpetually looking forward to the end of their unremitting consciousnesses, but to no avail. I posit that their inability to arrive at this end represents their intrinsic entrapment within consciousness and that it is precisely their birth into consciousness that traps them in their unceasing existence. In order to expose the characters as inescapably trapped, my work examines Beckett's portrayal of external and internal worlds by tracing the characters' deterioration in relation to time across the three novels. Essentially, I argue that, the possession of consciousness is itself the cause of the characters' entrapment in an interminable existence and this poignantly implies that they are damned from birth to incarceration.
