As the hardware technology of multi-touch screen matured, more and more software has been developed to support multi-touch control. The advantage of multitouch interface is obvious. It provides a much more easy, convenient and natural way to realize human-computer interaction. Currently there are few multi-touch supported applications in medical science. The target of this project is to design a 3D multi-touch medical application based on the Visualization Toolkit (VTK) to be used in a real multitouch table. This application is intended to be used by doctors to have a convenient and functional way to check the scanned images for the patients. VTK is an open-source, freely available software system for 3D computer graphics, image processing and visualization. But it lacks good support for multi-touch interface, which is the main motivation of the project. Furthermore VTK's message format is not compatible with the common multi-touch message format known as TUIO, which is provided by applications or devices, such as CCV (an Open Frameworks based multi-touch tracker).
