The complexity of industrial wastewater and treated effluents, where a matrix of pollutants with different concentrations co-exists, justified the need of representing them by general pollution parameters. Among those parameters, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) which reflects the total pollution load of wastewater or industrial waste is considered to be one of the most important parameters in wastewater and waste chemical treatment processes. However, the determination of COD is difficult which needs at least 2 hours by the standard titration method. Even though there have been many attempts to improve the performance of COD monitoring, due to the lack of effective method, the standard titration method is still dominant in many industrial applications which becomes an obstacle to the real-time control and optimization of the wastewater and waste chemical treatment processes. Therefore, the development of a simple, accurate, yet fast COD determination method is significant for the environmental monitoring and control.
