The advent of smart materials such as Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) has ushered a new era in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM) based on non-destructive evaluation (NDE). Exceptional advantages such as autonomous, real-time and online, remote monitoring may provide a cost-effective alternative to the conventional SHM techniques. Although piezoelectric material has been successfully used for structural damage detection in many areas, some fundamental research work such as the influence of the initial and external excitations of the main structure on the signature of PZT is still in need. In this study, the investigation starts with beam and plate structures. The fundamental formulation of electromechanical (EM) impedance method is derived for the simply supported and cantilevered beams and plates with excitations. The dynamic stiffness and EM impedance are obtained according to the model. In the experiment, aluminum beam and plate specimens bonded with PZT sensors are tested. The EM impedance of the sensor is measured by an HP 4192A impedance analyzer. The numerical simulations are also conducted to verify the developed models. Lastly, the experimental and numerical results are compared with the theoretical predictions to investigate the reliability of the models.
