Description
Summary:This study looked at the subject of environmental auditing. Investigation of the subject focused on the basic concepts of environmental auditing, its implications for businesses in Singapore and its opportunities for accountants. Whilst the findings were based mainly on literature review, a series of interviews with key personnels of selected firms was conducted and a survey of firms chosen randomly was instituted. There is still plenty of room for improvement of environmental auditing in Singapore; promotion and awareness of the subject is still not sufficient and the government could intensify its efforts. The results also reflected that for an environmental audit to be effectively performed, a multi-disciplinary team is needed and the accountant could contribute to this team effort. Environmental auditing would become increasingly important in Singapore in the near future for various reasons and it is hereby recommended that firms be proactive in taking up environmental auditing before they are beaten into doing it.
