Description
Summary:Destiny, a 20-minute documentary, revolves around three young Vietnamese women - Van, Tham, and Han - hoping to marry Singaporean men. Shot in Dong Thap and Can Tho provinces of Southern Vietnam, as well as Ho Chi Minh City, the film demonstrates the idealised vision these women harbour of starting life anew in Singapore, similar to the American dream that many immigrants share. The main objective of Destiny is to raise awareness of the issue of foreign brides in Singapore, through the stories of the three women. The documentary sheds light on the family background and living conditions of these women. Through their narration, the audience understands their dilemma and motivations before they leave for Singapore. Each woman reveals her inner hopes, fears and aspirations, and how marrying a Singaporean husband can help improve her own and their families’ standards of living. Despite having to leave their families and give up on their education, these women are willing to make these sacrifices to improve their family’s financial circumstances.
