These experiments are very important not only for testing the knowledge and understanding of a student’s academic learning but also for acclimatizing him to the real working environment. Traditionally, physical laboratories have been used for these experiments but these (physical laboratories) are very expensive, offer no flexibility and suffer from certain other drawbacks. Hence, remote laboratories have been seen as a viable alternative to physical laboratories as they do not suffer from these drawbacks and offer a multitude of other features to improve academic learning. The aim of this report is to present a comprehensive literature review on remote labs, study various remote lab implementations available and compare some of the most prominent remote lab systems, and finally suggest a suitable remote lab system for NTU and discuss its implementation, testing and performance. Moreover, it will also discuss some of the key issues with remote labs. The report will discuss the various methods of conducting student assessment using remote lab systems. Moreover, the report will discuss the need of remote lab systems in today’s academic world by presenting a detailed comparison between the remote labs and hands-on labs and discussing the advantages of remote labs over hands-on labs. Finally, the report will discuss some of the problems and limitations of the current remote labs systems and recommend certain modifications and improvements along with future work to enhance the practical learning experience.
