Summary: | Commercial RFID systems for inventory management are typically not available off the shelf and require a systems integrator contract; costs are typically in the millions, and this is prohibitive for small organizations. We investigate the use of commonly available, low-cost hobbyist-grade RFID hardware in a prototype inventory management system. We demonstrate a prototype system allowing for rapid self-checkout in a supermarket setting. Discrepancies between claimed and actual performance characteristics of the low-cost RFID hardware are also discussed. |
