Summary:The purpose of this report is to explain and demonstrate a prototype for managing moving objects in Database Management Systems (DBMS). SECONDO is developed over the last decade by University of Hagen in Germany. It is an “extensible open-source DBMS environment” with “no fixed data model”. This framework forms a new generic environment that is more flexible than common extensible and object-relational DBMS. Hence, it is suitable for research prototyping and teaching in any particular context on moving objects databases. In order to use or apply SECONDO, one has to understand fundamental concepts in moving objects and data types. This report provides a case study of the use of relational algebra for describing relational databases and data model for describing spatio-temporal data types. There has been a lot of research on moving object databases over the last decade. The objective of this project is to investigate how SECONDO can be used to develop application relevant to the local context. For example, a single value of moving point (mpoint for short) data type could represent a complete trip of a passenger on board an MRT or a LRT train which possibly has several changes of course along the path. Similarly, moving region (mregion) could represent a choking haze moving through the region.
