Our study, which consists of data collections, literature review, analysis and evaluation, focuses on the economic effects of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) ---patent infringement and the problems of IPR protection. A survey conducted by researchers in U.S., showing the importance of patent protection and other factors as a means of appropriation in stimulating R&D, is included. Besides, the extent to which patent protection should be reached out to developing countries is analysed, followed by a brief study of the pharmaceutical industry in the world and in China itself. In the concluding chapter, consequences of patent violation and possible strategies of foreign investors are offered in consideration of the problems discussed.
