Description
Summary:The concept of surface plasmons has been studied and experimented upon for decades and is applied in the visible as well as the near infrared frequencies to engineer and enhance light on a sub wavelength platform. If this concept, applied in the longer wavelength group such as the mid infra red (mid-IR), that is from 3-30Jlm, would tremendously increase the potential applications in various fields such as health, defense and industrial sectors. But there is one challenge which is being faced- the same analogy and information cannot be readily applied to the mid infrared range because the fundamental response of the materials is completely different in these two regimes. Hence, to counter this obstacle, new materials along with new aspects have to be designed and dealt with.
