Summary:This paper presents an experimental study on the effects of cool coatings, as well as parameters like distance and orientation on the radiation reflected between the facades of two buildings. The effects of the parameters on the surface temperature of the two facades would also be discussed in order to provide a more comprehensive coverage of the study. Using the energy software Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES), simulations were conducted to study the parameters and their effects on the radiation reflected between two facades. A simulation model was developed and validated using experimental results conducted in three blocks of North-South facing residential HDB estate in Punggol. The validated model was then used to conduct further simulations to achieve the project objectives. Simulations results showed that when the reflectivity of a South facing facade is increased from 0.42 to 0.85, a corresponding maximum increase in reflected radiation on the opposite North facing facade of 4.5W/m2 is observed. When the distance between the facades was varied, it was observed that distance and reflected radiation had a negative relationship. When the distance between the facades is decreased to 20m, a maximum reflected radiation of 6.5W/m2 is observed on the North facing facade, as compared to 4.5W/m2 and 2.5W/m2 when the facades are 25m and 30m apart respectively. When the facades are set to be East-West facing, a maximum reflected radiation of 9W/m2 on the East facing facade was observed. The changes in surface temperature on both the facades were also discussed.
