Summary:Project cargo, also known as heavy-lift cargo, is a niche sector of the maritime industry that ties closely to the World’s economic developments. This paper analyses the internal make-up and external environment of the shipping and logistics companies in relation to their suitability in project cargo transportation. The objective of this research is to allow various transport service providers to ascertain the feasibility of managing project cargoes as an asset to their business, and also enable them to make strategic decisions that enhance their competitiveness in this niche market. This research will involve the use of primary and secondary sources of qualitative information from academic literature and interviews respectively. Quantitative data from market research reports will also be used. Interview responses from industrial players will be used in the discussion to determine the specific segment of project cargoes transportation that shipping and logistics companies are best suited, and how they play a complementary to role in offering a holistic service to the end clients.
