Summary: | A major consideration in the design of excavation systems is the behavior of the retaining wall system. The objective of this project is to study the influence of soil parameters, wall stiffness, wall embedment depth (D), clay thickness under excavation (T), number of struts and the location of first strut on the wall deflection and bending moments for excavations in stiff clay deposits. A geotechnical finite element program PLAXIS 2D was used to perform the analyses. A total of 28 cases were considered. The linear elastic perfectly-plastic Mohr-Coulomb model was used to simulate the soil stress-strain behavior. The analyses indicate that the soil parameters and wall stiffness significantly influence the wall behavior. The wall embedment depth (D), clay thickness under excavation (T) and location of first strut have less influence on the wall performance for excavations in stiff clay deposits. |
