Summary:Carbon Nanotubes (CNT) have many useful applications and uses due to their unique inherent properties. By combining these properties with other various substances and materials, it is possible to achieve a nanocomposite with the desired properties for its intended use in engineering. These can range from high strength high ductility CNTs, Good thermal conductance, and optical properties such as photoluminescence to name a few. Chromatic materials like polydiacetylene (PDA) change colour when subjected to stimuli such as temperature, pH as well as chemical and mechanical stress. Efforts to induce this colour change by electrical means have been unsuccessful until a recent study whereby a PDA/CNT composite fibre changed colour in the presence of a current. This relatively new breakthrough has paved the way for various electrically-induced nanocomposites in a broad range of applications from electrical sensors to non-destructive evaluation of structures and objects. In the interest and context of this project, the electrical applications of carbon nanotubes will be studied and investigated, specifically the electrochromatic effect of CNT/PCDA nanocomposites.
