Many modern smart phones add the functionality of portable media players, pocket video cameras and GPS navigation units to form one multi-use device. As the smart phones become more and more convenient and efficient, many people start to develop the mobile application based on the mobile operation system platform to meet the different personal requirements. A mobile operating system is an operating system that operates a smart phone. For modern smart phones, there are many kinds of mobile operating systems such as Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS, Windows from Microsoft and so on. Among all the mobile operating systems, Android is the most widely used one for mobile application developers. The reason is Android is an open source platform and Google releases the code which allows the software to be freely modified and distributed by the mobile application developers. This project aims to develop an android mobile application to communicate with a portable data sensing module Arduino. Arduino works as a microcontroller in order to make the application interactive objects more accessible. It can be used to measure our natural environment by receiving input data from large numbers of sensors. Arduino also can be used to comtrol lights, motors, and other actuators. The android mobile operating system and Arduino development environment offer a wonderful platform for the research on development of a portable data sensing module for mobile sensing. In this project, the aim is to develop a mobile application of android smart phone to communicate with the portable data sensing module Arduino. The mobile application will realize a measurement instrument capable of sensing the natural environment. According to the data sending by mobile application, the Arduino will affect its surrounding by controlling the lights. This experience will give an opportunity to conduct an in-depth study in microprocessor development environment and android operating system. Today, smart phone plays an important role in our life which allows us not only to communication but also to buy, sell and many other miraculous things.
