There are many analogies between the management of manufacturing systems and inventories in warehouses. For example, both systems attempt to achieve satisfying service level by maintaining minimum inventory holding costs. Based on the detailed analysis of these similarities, a new control policy for the management of production systems is proposed in this thesis. Although the new policy is initially formulated as a control methodology to be applied at all machines in a single part type tandem line production system, it is also applicable to reentrant and multiple part type systems. Based on the analysis of the simulation results, the author concludes that it is not necessary to control all machines in a production system with the proposed control policy. If it is strategically applied to specific key machine(s), the generated performance is equivalent to the case when all machines in the production system are controlled with this policy. In addition, experimental results also indicate that under certain circumstances the proposed new policy provides better performance when compared to other control policies.
