Description
Summary:With the increasing awareness of environmental protection in all industries, the maritime industry is also under scrutiny to become cleaner and greener. In analyzing the maritime industry's response to the "green" culture, it is important to consider the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s effort in motivating the industry. Looking into the future, there are two influential upcoming regulations which include the global sulphur limit and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). Market forces such as fuel price fluctuations and new-building prices are also influencing factors to the future green trends. In order to cope with stringent regulations and to reduce costs through more efficient operations, the two most discussed initiatives are switching to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fuel and the building of Eco-ships.
