Description
Summary:This final year project studied optimal design of wideband Vivaldi antennas for ultra-wideband radar applications with high range resolution. After a literature review and comparison between two types of Vivaldi antennas, namely, antipodal Vivaldi antennas and tapered slot antennas, tapered slot antenna type is selected as the basic antenna type in the design. On the basis of this design, operating principals and the factors affecting performances and studied. In addition to the standard taper slot antenna design, a few variations are proposed and simulated, including up/down shifting, left/right shifting of the backside patch, changing the fan shaped opening angle on the backside patch, the additional vertical and horizontal slotlines in the front side patch and comparison with step slot antenna. This study included theoretical analysis and realistic computer simulation. Based on the results of simulation, suggestions were given in order to broaden the available bandwidth which is under 10dB return loss. This report summarized the past research on tapered slot antenna, the objective of this project, the design and optimization of Vivaldi antenna, and the simulation results with analysis.
