With inadequate research on how different policies can affect the sustainable development of port cities in Asia, we choose to study top Asian port cities namely, Shanghai, Singapore, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Ningbo, Busan, Hong Kong and Shenzhen. We conduct an analysis of statistical data gathered from the selected Asian port cities over recent years to study trends in three aspects of sustainability namely economic, environmental and social. The data analysis is then supplemented by industrial findings in the form of interviews and seminars to understand the perspectives of different stakeholders in a port city. In aiming to achieve sustainable development for port cities, different stakeholders’ interests and needs have to be factored in before implementation of policies to be effective. For port cities to grow in the different aspects of sustainability, both port and urban systems must be jointly analysed to minimise conflict of interest among different stakeholders, which is still lacking currently amongst selected Asian port cities.
