Description
Summary:Underground space has been increasingly recognized as a solution for sustainable urban development in many countries. In land scare Singapore, there is a pertinent need for new dimension and space for urban expansion and development; therefore it is important to have a good understanding of rock response during excavation of large rock caverns. This project aims to carry out numerical analysis to analyse the stability of underground rock caverns under static loads. With the results obtained, the largest cavern that could possibly be constructed in Bukit Timah granite is explored. Discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) has been widely applied in simulations of discontinuous blocky systems, and is adopted in this study to generate accurate and reliable results. Various rock cavern models will be drawn and simulated in DDA. In addition, stage excavation of rock model will also be conducted in this report to examine the effect it has on the stability of rock caverns.
