Description
Summary:This project studies the seismic response of the earth embankment using PLAXIS 2D 2011. Much focus of the study was given to the comparison of the maximum crest accelerations and displacements obtained from the earth embankment models, with the addition of berm with various dimensions and variation of earth embankment fills. General reduction was found in the maximum crest acceleration with increase of berm sizes. But, increasing berm width to embankment height ratio beyond 0.6 and berm height to embankment height ratio of 0.8 would cause adverse effect. Having berm on both sides of the earth embankment was found to reduce the maximum crest acceleration more significantly than having berm on a single side. Moreover, it was found that the influence of the berm width on the horizontal displacement at the crest depends on the strength of embankment fill materials.
